Glaucoma: Significance, causes and treatment
Glaucoma is a slowly progressing eye disease that permanently damages the optic nerve – often without noticeable symptoms. Without treatment, glaucoma can lead to blindness. Early diagnosis is therefore crucial to halt its progression and preserve vision.
Why regular check-ups are so important
From the age of 40, we recommend regular preventative eye examinations. These include measuring intraocular pressure, assessing the optic nerve, and testing the visual field. This allows us to detect glaucoma early – often before the first symptoms appear.

- Corneal pachymetry: Measures the thickness of the cornea to accurately interpret intraocular pressure values.
- GDx Nerve Fiber Analyzer: Detects even the slightest changes in the optic nerve before the first symptoms appear – contactless and painless.
- Computer perimetry: Detects even the smallest visual field defects and enables early glaucoma diagnosis.

How do I know if I have glaucoma?
Often, they go unnoticed – initial visual field defects often go unnoticed. Therefore, a preventative examination from the age of 40 is advisable.
Is elevated intraocular pressure always glaucoma?
No, but it is a risk factor. The overall assessment, including the optic nerve and visual field, is crucial.
Can glaucoma be cured?
No cure – but the progression can be stopped or significantly slowed if it is detected early.
What treatment options are there?
Eye drops, laser treatments or surgical procedures – depending on the stage and course of the disease.
How often are checks necessary?
Depending on the risk profile and treatment – usually every 3 to 6 months to check intraocular pressure and optic nerve function.
